Stockport Council Quiet Lanes Consultation
In 2020 Stockport Council launched a Safe Streets Save Lives campaign to create enhanced opportunity for active travel. This enabled people to socially distance during essential journeys and exercise through the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery period.
As a result of this ‘Quiet Lanes’ were introduced on several roads across the constituency, including:
- Quarry Road, Gillbertbank, High Lane and Werneth Low Road in Romiley and Woodley;
- Sandhill Lane, Smithy Lane, Ley Lane, Mill Brow, Hollywood Road, Church Road and Gibb Lane in Marple Bridge/ Mellor;
Quiet Lanes are minor rural roads that pay special attention to the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and those with mobility impairment. They are intended to enable such users to enjoy country lanes more safely.
The Council have argued that the use of gateway and repeater signage highlights to motorists that the road is a shared-use facility, encouraging slower speeds and a culture of respect for other users.
Subject to funding, it is proposed that the features remain in place on a permanent basis. Stockport Council would like to hear your views on the Quiet Lanes that have been introduced, and specifically to what extent you agree or disagree with the proposal to retain the features, as opposed to arranging for them to be removed.
Please provide your feedback via the link at the bottom of the page. The consultation is running until 3rd July.
